The tremendous innovation of the Kenton Living Building is embodied in its attempt at the complete fulfillment of Cascadia's Living Building Challenge. In doing so, the building will accelerate the advancement of Portland’s green building movement towards full sustainability.
The four-unit townhouse style building replaces the above grade elements of an existing duplex, thereby doubling the site’s density. This increase renders the net-zero water credit achievable only if grey water is legalized in Oregon. Black water will be virtually eliminated with the installation of evaporating composting toilets, with the resulting bio-solids benefiting an FCS forest partnered with the project for habitat exchange. Net-zero energy will be achieved through a combination of energy conservation and photovoltaics. Using SERA’s extensive green materials database as our first source for product selection, we will be challenging manufacturers in our region to create compliant materials, products and systems that are ecological sound as well as environmentally friendly. |
