Located at the center of PSU’s urban campus, Neuberger Hall currently serves as the home for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. SERA was retained to study the options to transform Neuberger Hall from an aging, 1960s era building into a modern, high performance classroom building.
SERA assessed the design opportunities and constraints, investigated the condition of each of the building systems, and quantified the university’s program needs (including growth projections). The findings were combined with goals developed during a series of visioning exercises and an eco-charette conducted with PSU’s Building Advisory Committee. This information was synthesized into a range of design options. The schemes were adjusted to reflect the goals of the PSU Framework Plan, including the emerging concept of an Eco District.
The options studied ranged from a deferred maintenance scheme (limited to mitigating Life Safety, Seismic, HVAC and Hazardous materials deficiencies) to a scheme that added four stories to the existing structure, carved the building into an “H” shape allowing better access to daylight, created new entries on both Broadway and the park blocks and marked them with an elevated vegetated court connecting the building to the adjacent Park Blocks.
The selected renovation scheme improved building access, wayfinding, classroom and office distribution, energy and seismic performance while limiting overall area of renovation to approximately 40% of the building. As one of PSU’s most utilized buildings, a three-step phasing plan was developed to minimize relocation costs for faculty, students and staff. |
